We started going to the College and young adult ("Career"...?) Bible study. It is called...."Driven"! Basically, it's three or four married couples and then a bunch of college aged kids. Tommy and I have been the oldest of the 'marrieds' but also the newly-weds. So, that basically makes us.... in the exact middle? Maybe? It's hard being the oldest! We're supposed to be all wise. Such pressure.
We've been going through the book of James. It's just such a great book. And God must really want me to know it, because different groups I've been in since college have all been studying it. We've been learning how wonderful God's grace is for giving us the Word. And what an honor it is to be able to please him in what we do and say!
And then we got to have a movie night all together! And we got to vote on suggestions. I, being the mature and classy woman of wisdom that I am, suggested Despicable Me, which I got for Christmas from my in-law family. It honestly is flying up my personal chart of fave's. To give you an idea of the chart in which this movie is competing, some highlights would include Emperor's New Groove, Elf, and Singing in the Rain.
Anyway, in the vote for the Movie Night feature, I won!! I mean.... the movie won!!
So one weekend, we all gathered (movie quote: "gather!"). Moved the couches from the lobby into the main auditorium. Dropped the big screen. Pulled out the church's popcorn machine. And watched. So. Good. And I think everyone liked it! There was laughing, crying, and awww-ing at the cute parts. If you, dear friends, have not seen it yet, I feel sorry for you. And now I'm doing the thing where I build something up too much... so... It's not that great. You probably won't like it.
But it was so fun to watch with everyone!!
We also got to host a game night at our apartment. We started out by playing telephone charades. One group comes up with a scenario. The two that night were the following: Tim Tebow goes canoeing and converts an alligator who tries to eat him. And, a dinosaur lays an egg and out pops Michael Jackson. The one group tells one teammate of the other group their scenario and watches as they try to pass on the same acted out scene well enough so the last person can guess what the scenario is- no talking, only acting. i know I didn't do a great job of explaining the game, but it is pretty entertaining stuff. Especially since a lot of the people in the group are rather shy.
And then almost everyone played Quelf. Some of us started out playing Phase 10, and then quit to watch the rest of the big group's game. Quelf is pretty much the oddest game you've ever played. The rules change, the ways to get points are crazy and fickle, and everyone has to get out of their comfort zone. For instance, I've seen people get assigned weird nicknames, dance jigs, stuff objects into their clothes, and hold a toilet plunger. And it IS a good way to get to know people and their... skills...?
And then Tommy and the boys from "Driven" (the college/career group's name) decided to have a boys bonding night. And now, to tell you ALL about it, our special guest blogger, Tommy!!
"It started innocently enough with a trip to the driving range. The driving range is open after dark because it has lights. We spent about an hour or so bonding and hitting balls. After that was over, we decided to grab some dinner. To keep up with the manly night, an eating competition was proposed by myself and Jon. At first, the group was not very excited. Some people thought that Cici's Pizza would be a better place. But after some persuasion, Brian and Patrick agreed to participate. The competition: be the first to eat 50 McDonald's chicken nuggets. There was a special going at the time for Super Bowl weekend where you could get 50 nuggets for $9.99. Delicious. We arrived at the McDonald's with excitement and anticipation of the competition ahead. As we stood in line, all of the McDonald's workers heard how many orders of 50 nuggets were coming in. We had 4 for 4 different people. And we were eating there. They were a little grossed out and said it couldn't be done. We would show them... After all four of us had gotten our nuggets and 8 sauces (yes, you get 2 per 10 nuggets) we sat down at a bar-like area in the restaruant. It didn't seem like it was going to be very hard at first. Jon, who eats a ridiculous amount anyway, was leading the charge. He finished half without any problem. I made it through them too but was feeling like the whole 50 might be a little much. Brian and Patrick were complaining after around 18. My method was to dunk the nugget into BBQ sauce and then eat the whole nugget at once. Jon and the rest of the guys took to biting the nuggets in half. I figured this would just make me feel like I was eating more. We documented this whole event on my facebook page if you are curious. Jon was the first to complete the 50 nuggets. His time was somewhere around 45 minutes. It didn't seem to really phase him all that much. I was about 7 nuggets behind him. Those last few were one of the hardest things I've eaten in my entire life. I decided that I should switch to ketchup with 5 nuggets to go and instantly gagged as I tried to eat one. Ketchup was not a good choice. It litterally took me 15 more minutes to eat the last of mine. They were disgustingly cold by that time. Brian and Patrick, in the meantime, had given up. Brian at 31 and Patrick at 32, just to beat Brian. Jon and I then autographed our nugget boxes and presented them to the McDonalds staff. They were impressed and even took pictures of the boxes with their phones. On our way out the door, a little fat kid came up to me and asked if I had too much coffee..? Apparently, in his mind, coffee makes you hungry. His grandma didn't seem very impressed with our feat. She told us that her granddaughter (also plump) had eaten 10 nuggets and she was only 8 years old. I feel sorry for those children. So that is the story of Chicken Nugget Bowl 2011."
There you have it, folks. The mature men that Kim, the girls, and I get to hang out with.
To sum up, we have been actively participating in "Driven" and hope our legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all mankind.
